THE WATERBOYS, ROCKEFELLER, OSLO
30TH NOVEMBER 2000
REVIEW BY CHRISTIAN FOG

I will start with the set list:

Let It Happen
Charlatan's Lament
Strange Boat
Glastonbury Song
We Are Jonah
All the Things
Dumbing down the World
Be My Enemy
Is She Conscious
Return of Pan

The Word Is Not His Bond (acoustic)
Wind in the Wires (acoustic)

Don't bang the drum
Savage Earth Heart
Satisfaction

Encores:

My Love Is My Rock
Whole of the Moon

Encore 2:

Fisherman's Blues (acoustic + maybe 400 voices singing the fiddle parts)

The Signal, Night Falls on London, actually starts once but the box music continues. A few
minutes later, it starts again and this time it is the real thing. Everybody on their feet. I
don't think Let It Happen really rocks and Charlatan's Lament is a bit slooow. But with
Strange Boat the party starts.

As earlier reviews have stated, the new band is playing real tight. There are no problems or
misunderstandings and Mike is leading them perfectly. But I don't think he adds anything extra
personally. Not too many solos and he doesn't talk much. Then Richard Naiff is the more
expressive physically. I think he was trying to kill his keyboard or something in most of the
songs. He didn't succeed but it sounded great.

Rarely have I had such a good view on a rock concert. As I said, standing first row on a
raised platform, I could see all the players, all of the stage, the audience and the Whole of
the Moon all of the time. Normally you end up behind some 20 years old, 195 cm testosterone
boys and if you try to move somewhere else there are some 21 years 196 cm instead. Being so
high above the crowd I felt like Mike was looking at me most of the time (Hey, of course I
wasn't alone on the platform). So every now and then I just had to wave at him. What did I
have to lose? He might've waved back.

On Don't Bang the Drum Mike gets some problems with his guitar in the start, so he stops the
others and restarts (without the intro). Pretty irritating (I mean for the band) on a song
with taped intro starting in the dark, building up expectations. Nevertheless, the song is one
of the highlights. In fact this whole section is - The Drum, Savage + Satisfaction.

After the last song, a group of people in the middle of the floor starts humming Red Army
Blues. But I think we were all too exhausted and it soon dies out. It is nice to stroll out
in the chilly night. Mike didn't say anything about it, but the place was packed with smoke.
Always is.
